Of course, one thing that you must remember is that your employees aren't just a resource. They're human beings with needs and limitations. If you treat them as just something to be used to improve your business, they're going to end up becoming frustrated and resentful. This means that you're not only providing your employees with the kind of content that you think they need, but you're allowing them to take control of the kind of content that they think is valuable to one another, and even to you. This simple act shows your employee s just how much you value their ability to judge what is important in your business and helps them to feel much more closely connected to it.

Encouraging feedback

One of the worst mistakes that any business owner can make is to assume that they always know best. Sure, you might have the benefit of a bird's eye view of the business as a whole, but your employees are the ones down in the trenches, so to speak. This means that they're going to have a completely different perspective that you might not have access to. You should make sure to encourage your employees to provide feedback and suggestions on how to improve the business. Not only is this going to allow you to have a much more holistic idea of how your business is doing and what you can change to make it even better, but being able to share ideas is going to make your employees feel much more valued than if they were just doing what they were told. Plenty of people end up getting frustrated at work because they don't feel like their voices are being heard. If you avoid letting that happen, you're going to create a strong sense of loyalty among your employees.

It's never a good idea to be too rigid in the way that your business functions, and it's especially important that you be flexible with your employees. Sure, it might have been common for a long time for businesses to have things like strict working hours or a dedicated office space, but the rise of communication technology means that you don't necessarily need those things anymore. It's now possible for many people to work remotely with just as much ease as if they were in the office. Because of this, you're able to offer a much more flexible environment for your employees. This means that you can allow them to work around their lives and families in a way that makes their work much less of a burden. Not only can this significantly increase productivity, but it can prevent your employees becoming resentful of their jobs.

Recognising great work

There are few things more frustrating and discouraging to your employees than to find themselves working hard every day without ever getting any recognition for what they do. Far too many employers expect the very best out of their employees without really offering an incentive for why they should bother. Never assume that a paycheck at the end of the month is going to be everything an employee needs to go above and beyond the call of duty. Make sure that you take the time to recognise great work when you see it. If an employee has done something that really goes beyond what you asked of them, make sure that it's recognised and rewarded. Not only does this create a bond between you and your employees, but it gives them a reason to work as hard as possible at all times.

Creating a safe workplace

Everyone has the right to a safe working environment, and you should do everything in your power to provide that to your employees. This doesn't just mean in terms of things like health and safety, though that is incredibly important, it also means that no one should fear discrimination based on things like race, religion, class, or gender expression. You should do everything you can to encourage a diverse and open environment in the workplace and make sure that any discrimination is dealt with as quickly and effectively as possible. If your employees don't feel safe and supported, then they're never going to have the kind of connection with you that you really want. If you show them that you're in their corner at all times, you're going to be able to work together to make your business truly great.

Far too many business owners treat their employees as disposable in some way. As though they are the only person who really matters and everyone else is just there to follow their orders. Make sure that you do everything in your power to avoid this. Otherwise, you're going to end up with a team that doesn't trust you and isn't willing to put in the effort required to keep your business running at all times. Remember, a business isn't just made up of one person; it's a combination of each and every person in it working together to create something greater than the sum of its parts.
