There are only so many hours in a day. But when you’re at work, those hours can seem to fly by. You might have a long list of things to get done, but seem to never get anything ticked off your to do list. So if that sounds like you, then it sounds like you need to be more productive at work. The time you have at work is critical, so it is important to spend the time well in order to maximize business success. But if you find that you get caught up with lots of small things and can’t seem to get your business to grow, then it's time for a change. Here are some steps to take to help you to increase your productivity at work.
Track Your Time
When you track your time, you’re much more accountable and aware of how long things are taking you. Some tasks shouldn’t take more than ten minutes. But if you find that you can’t get a task like that done in an hour, then what are you doing with your time? Keep on track and monitor how long things take you.
Take Regular Breaks
It might sound a bit counterproductive, but if you take regular breaks, then you tend to be much more productive. Because when you’re back at your desk, you’re ready to get on with work. When you don’t take breaks, you tend to only half work as you’re almost trying to take a break at the same time.
When it's your business, it can be hard to let some tasks fall to others. But if you are doing all of the small tasks, when do you have time for the tasks that will actually help to grow your business? Sometimes outsourcing work can be the best idea you can have. It can mean hiring a virtual assistant or looking for interim HR firms to deal with some specific tasks that you have. Outsourcing can be great as you don’t take on an employee full time, and you don’t have to think about learning how to do something. When you hire an expert in that field, you can just leave them to deal with it. Meaning your time is spent more wisely.
Some meetings can’t be avoided. But there are many that can. Before you get yourself stuck in another unproductive meeting, why not see if you can sort it out over the phone or by email first? Lots of time is wasted in meetings and time is precious. So if it doesn’t need a formal meeting, try to avoid it.
Turn Off Notifications
In this day and age, we have so many distractions. We might get down to work, but we see that we have an email ping up or a social media notification pop up on our smartphone. The best thing to not be tempted to have a look is to turn off your notifications. You can deal with that later, making what you are doing much more productive.
